Hiidenvuori Hill

Hiidensaarentie

Hiidenvuori, located on Hiidensaari Island in Lake Pyhäjärvi, is a natural hill fort often referred to as the "Koli of Kymenlaakso." Its summit rises more than 60 meters above the surface of the Kymijoki River, dominating the surrounding landscape. The hill’s striking terrain and scenic appeal are defined by surfaces smoothed and rounded by the Ice Age, sheer vertical cliffs, and a distinct fissure on its northwestern flank. At the western foot of the hill lies a sandy heath forest, a remnant of the glacial period. A Bronze Age cairn and a possible Iron Age hill fort serve as evidence of the island's central importance to ancient inhabitants. The area also includes a valuable protected broad-leaved woodland.

A piano was first carried to the top of Hiidenvuori in the summer of 1914. The main event was the play Hiiden vuoren vihkiäiset (The Inauguration of Hiidenvuori), performed by actors from the National Theatre of Finland.

Iitti Church

Iitintie 846, 47520 Iitti

The wooden church of Iitti was built at the intersection of land and water routes in 1693, shortly before the Great Northern War. The model for this symmetrical cross-shaped church is believed to have been Catherine’s Church in Stockholm. Its wooden vaulted ceilings were crafted after the stone church in Hollola, while the high hipped roof reflects Dutch architectural style.

The church, which is of significant architectural and historical value, received its iconic "Iitti Red" color by the early 19th century at the latest. During a major renovation between 1913 and 1914, the wooden roof shingles were replaced with cement ones. At the same time, the local woodwork was complemented by stained-glass windows for the altar wall, imported from Italy. Since 2010, the cement shingles and the exterior paintwork have been renewed. The stained-glass windows were also conserved a few years ago.
